iPhone 3G Review : Longggggg overdue.

Posted September 2nd, 2008 by minicloud

Here’s my iPhone 3G review that is WAYYYYYYYYY overdue.

Despite being an Apple fangirl, there are some design issues and kinks that I thought Apple should have ironed out after the release of iPhone before releasing the iPhone 3G.

Sure there are improvements made like the new GPS system and so on. I gather that in order to put in more of the basic stuff would mean more sleepless nights for the programmers.
Here’s a rundown of what I -feel- that iPhone 3G lacks:

  • The ability to MMS: sure alot of us already know that, Apple argues that you can now email your photos. Since they say email >>> MMS, who the hell argues with that now?
  • Bluetooth: Please tell me, WTF is the bluetooth for if I can’t Bluetooth my images/songs etc etc to another phone/computer? oh wait… it is -only- used for freaking bluetooth devicessss…i seee~ still, it doesn’t fully maximises the potential of Bluetooth.
  • Ringtones: it annoys the hell out of me knowing that my ringtones and sms tones are -only- limited to the ones that are preset in my iPhone 3G. I can’t use mp3 ringtones at all. Only reason I can think of is to facilitate ringtone sales in iTunes and this sucks.
  • SMS issues: You can’t forward sms to someone else. which is kinda sucky.
  • Camera: only 2mp. blah blah blah… you know, stuff people has already complained about. No flash, no zoom, no way i can bluetooth or mms it…. most importantly, NO VIDEO. I think with your default App of YouTube, there shld’ve been some way you could upload videos into Youtube, but then again, no video mode in iPhone makes the camera more wtf than it already is.
  • Battery life: I don’t know if anyone else has this problem too. Maybe I fiddle with it too much, I mean it is pure Apple goodness, but it seems as though the batter runs out prettttty fast for a mobile phone.

Now onto the good bits which I feel should be mentioned.

  • Internet capabilities: I feel the iPhone harnesses the power of internet well, sure there are some kinks which include the inability to load flash but hey, it IS a phone and not a computer.
  • SMS: despite not being able to forward smses, I tried typing in a URL in my sms and sending it to a friend just minutes ago. The link turned out to be active, meaning she could just tap on it and access the link right on her Safari. awesome yes? The fact that smses look like IM conversations, it’s so easy to continue a conversation without having to think where the conversation stopped. Someone shld’ve thought of this long ago.
  • iPhone Apps: I love Apps~!! There are just so many of them. It makes the Internet harder to live without. I find that i update my Twitter more and now that i have Wordpress on my iPhone too, I think you can be sure to find even more random blog posts from me. There’s limitless potentials in this, as long as someone comes up with an App that is useful and provides more function to the iPhone, it makes the iPhone more useful too.
  • Games: To be very honest, I don’t like playing games on phones. I have my own handheld consoles (both DSlite and PSP) but the tilt sensors in the iPhone makes iPhone games unique in their own right.
  • Email: I can open files like images, PDF, Excel, Word in my Email. They are downloaded into the iPhone so you don’t have to worry about not having internet access to access the files you want again. Emails like Livejournal comment notifications also point directly to Safari when you want to reply it which is the same as when you try and access it through your laptop or desktops.

So yeah, that’s my review on the iPhone. I hope you find it useful in your decision to purchase one.

I totally agree on the review..
I still own the 2G version but 4 me its basically the same.

4 the ringtone prob search 4 Mac software “iToner”.
Its drag & drop which makes it so easy 2 make custom ringtones.
(I can hook u up with the purchased version, but ssshhh.. dont tell ;) 0

4 the battery life.. 1 of the reasons why I stick 2 the 2G version.
As been told BL of the 3G version is half of the 2G.

Well good luck with ur iPhone fellow-apple-freak ;)

    (finally i can comment :) )

    Hey Xiaoyun,
To make a ringtone, simply open the mp3 that you want, and use Garage Band and use the “cycle” function to set the place where you want the ringtone in the track.

Then use “send ringtone to iTunes”, and it’ll sync with your iPhone.

That’s how I pull all my ringtones out.

    Hope that helps.

There are many apps to get rid of those problems that you have listed. You probably already know that :)
